Identity: How to treat yourself 2. Postcolonialism is the continual shedding of the old skin of Western thought and discourse and the emergence of new self-awareness, critique, and celebration. It is like a process of Lost and Found.

Postcolonialism , the historical period or state of affairs representing the aftermath of Western colonialism ; the term can also be used to describe the concurrent project to reclaim and rethink the history and agency of people subordinated under various forms of imperialism.

The Film Theory in Practice series fills a gaping hole in the world of film theory. By marrying the explanation of a film theory with the interpretation of a film, the volumes provide discrete examples of how film theory can serve as the basis for textual analysis. The second book in the series, Postcolonial Theory and Avatar offers a concise introduction to postcolonial theory in jargon-free language and shows how this theory can be deployed to interpret James Cameron's high-grossing, immensely popular, and critically acclaimed film. At the same time, it has been also criticized for repeating the colonialist fantasy of saving natives doomed by imperialist aggression.

This article comments on the debate concerning the disparity between theory and practice in postcolonial studies. It suggests that anti-colonialism during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is founded on the idea that harmony between theory and practice is crucial for improved collective co-existence. In this line of argument, theory becomes synonymous with practice, giving rise to a dizzying variety of terms and concepts. All three cohere around the emergence of a global phenomenology: transcendental phenomenology, existential phenomenology, and spiritual phenomenology. Keywords: theory , practice , postcolonial studies , anti-colonialism , imperialism , transcendental phenomenology , existential phenomenology , spiritual phenomenology. Postcolonialism

Postcolonialism is the critical academic study of the cultural legacy of colonialism and imperialism , focusing on the human consequences of the control and exploitation of colonized people and their lands. More specifically, it is a critical theory analysis of the history, culture, literature, and discourse of usually European imperial power. Postcolonialism encompasses a wide variety of approaches, and theoreticians may not always agree on a common set of definitions. On a simple level, through anthropological study, it may seek to build a better understanding of colonial life—based on the assumption that the colonial rulers are unreliable narrators —from the point of view of the colonized people. On a deeper level, postcolonialism examines the social and political power relationships that sustain colonialism and neocolonialism , including the social, political and cultural narratives surrounding the colonizer and the colonized. This approach may overlap with studies of contemporary history , and may also draw examples from anthropology, historiography , political science , philosophy , sociology , and human geography. Sub-disciplines of postcolonial studies examine the effects of colonial rule on the practice of feminism , anarchism , literature , and Christian thought.
