The integrated approach in biorefinery mainly involves the utilization of various agroindustrial byproducts such as raw materials for the production of several biobased products like biofuels, bioenergy, and other high-value chemicals. Biofuels are the backbone of biorefineries, however, production of value-added biomolecules such as biopigments, biopolymers, biosurfactants, and nutritional yeast has been attracting great attention.

Expansion of biobased industrial production in the United States will require an overall scale-up of manufacturing capabilities, di versification of processing technologies, and reduction of costs. The development of efficient ''biorefineries" that integrate production of numerous biobased products would help reduce costs and allow biobased products to compete more effectively with petroleum-based products. The development of new or improved low-cost processing technologies will largely determine which biobased products become available. Currently, certain processing technologies are well established while others show promise but will require additional refinement or research before they come into practical use.

If the living standards of western societies are to be maintained while those of the developing world change at their current tempo, then, because of the depletion of fossil resources and concerns about the environment, the concept of biorefining, following the principles of green chemistry as well as sustainability, will surely become more and more important in the future. Biorefinery is an integrated process in which biomass is converted to higher added value products with zero or near zero net CO2 emissions. The biorefinery concept is based on the similar concept behind traditional petrochemical refineries and partially uses related transformation processes. However, the main value-adding technologies associated with biorefineries are more complex, offering a greatest potential given the huge variety and quantity of renewable biomass and derived products. In addition, the biorefinery provides the possibility to develop non-polluting and sustainable industries with low environmental impact.
