Athletic Taping and Bracing 2

Athletic taping is the process of applying tape directly to the skin or over prewrap in order to maintain a stable position of bones and muscles during athletic activity. It is a procedure that uses athletic tape pressure-sensitive tape similar to surgical tape or elastic therapeutic tape , attached to the skin , to physically hold muscles or bones at a certain position. This reduces pain and aids recovery. Taping is usually used to help recover from overuse and other injuries. The general goals of athletic taping are to restrict the motion of an injured joint, in order to add stability for a temporary period of time. It compresses soft tissues to reduce swelling, support anatomical structures involved in the injury, serve as a splint or secure a splint, secure dressing or bandages, protect the injured joint from re-injury, and protect the injured part while the injured part is in the healing process. Taping has many roles such as to support the ligaments and capsules of unstable joints by limiting excessive or abnormal anatomical movement.

Perrin pdf. Summary: The premier text for athletic taping and bracing is back in a stunning fourth edition. Newly expanded to cover casting techniques, Athletic Taping, Bracing, and Casting, Fourth Edition With Web Resource, continues to set itself apart from the pack with superior photos and illustrations, precise step-by-step instructions, and pinpoint focus on the techniques that athletic trainers and therapists are most likely to apply in clinical practice. Author Ian McLeod joins veteran author David Perrin in this fourth edition to lend further expertise in the application guidelines and precautions for casting and splinting. The book follows a systematic approach for each major joint and body region, covering traditional taping as well as rigid strap taping, elastic kinesiology taping, and techniques for immobilization with casting and splinting. The photos that depict taping sequences feature tape with darkened edges that enable readers to distinguish the layers and patterns of the tape applied in each step, providing invaluable visual aids for both students and professionals. In addition, icons in the text will indicate when a technique is also demonstrated in the companion online video.

Ankle sprains are recurrent injuries in basketball, hence more and more athletes are taping their ankles to promote joint stability, aiming at improving dynamic balance and, consequently, functional performance. To verify the effects of elastic and rigid athletic taping on the functional performance and level of comfort of basketball players with chronic ankle instability. Twenty-one athletes aged between 18 and 30 years mean age The Star Excursion Balance Test SEBT and the Figure-of-8 hop test F8 were applied unilaterally to assess functional performance, considering the ankle of greater instability in three situations: without athletic taping, with rigid athletic taping and with elastic athletic taping. A draw was held to determine the order in which the tests held over a number of days would be applied. A questionnaire was conducted to assess comfort on the same day the athletic tapes were applied.

This text is an excellent teaching reference for athletic training students or any person interested in the taping intervention. The author establishes a foundation for the reader, beginning with the basic knowledge of anatomical structures and the biomechanics of the joints and then discussing the appropriate application of tape and braces for treatment or prevention of injuries. There are numerous color illustrations of step-by-step instructions for each taping procedure described; the tape in the illustrations is outlined in black, making it easier for the reader to follow along. The anatomy pictures, published by Primal Pictures, are used to enhance the discussion of the bony, muscular, and surface anatomy for each joint. The text is augmented by palpation landmarks that are highlighted in a table, while new terms are bolded throughout the text and defined in a separate block to provide an easy reference for definitions.

Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries in sports. There is some discussion as to what method is best to assist an athlete in returning to play after an ankle injury: taping or bracing? Many school athletic programs have a limited budget and do not have a supply of braces to provide athletes. Due to limits in time and supplies, it is also not practical to tape every athlete in order to prevent an ankle injury, especially when medical research has shown that preventative ankle taping does not necessarily reduce the risk of injury. In addition, taping loosens the longer it is worn and the more the athlete sweats, rendering it less effective. If an athlete has no past medical history of an ankle injury, it might be in their best interest to invest in an ankle brace, if they feel the need for extra support or if their coach recommends it.
