## Lecture Notes on General Relativity

These lecture notes are a lightly edited version of the ones I handed out while teaching Physics 8. Each of the chapters is available here as PDF. What is even more amazing, the notes have been translated into French by Jacques Fric. Je ne parle pas francais, mais cette traduction devrait etre bonne. Dates refer to the last nontrivial modification of the corresponding file fixing typos doesn't count. Note that, unlike the book, no real effort has been made to fix errata in these notes, so be sure to check your equations.

The topic of this course is the classical relativistic theory of gravity, General Relativity. This is a geometric theory: the key idea is that gravity is a manifestation of the curvature of space-time. We will then discuss the field equations of general relativity, and explore the physical properties of interesting simple solutions, describing black holes, cosmology, and gravitational waves. Suggestions for the web page are also welcome. There are many good books, a selection of which are listed below.

## Introduction to General Relativity

Introduction to General Relativity is an introductory text on the concepts and modes of calculation used in general relativity. Topics covered range from Newton's laws of motion and the Galilean transformation to tensor analysis, equations of motion of free particles, electromagnetism, and gravitational fields and waves. Solutions of the field equations are also given. The emphasis is on the actual performance of relativistic calculations, rather than on mathematical rigor or exhaustive completeness.

This page intentionally left blankRelativityAn Introduction to Special and General RelativityThoroughly revised and updated, and now also including special relativ-ity, this book provides a pedagogical introduction to relativity. It is basedon lectures given by the author in Jena over the last decades, and coversthe material usually presented in a three-term course on the subject. Itis self-contained, but the reader is expected to have a basic knowledge oftheoretical mechanics and electrodynamics. The necessary mathematicaltools tensor calculus, Riemannian geometry are provided. The authordiscusses the most important features of both special and general rel-ativity, as well as touching on more dicult topics, such as the eldof charged poledipole particles, the Petrov classication, groups of mo-tions, exact solutions and the structure of innity.

*In physics , the special theory of relativity , or special relativity for short, is a scientific theory regarding the relationship between space and time. In Albert Einstein 's original treatment, the theory is based on two postulates : [1] [2].*

### Introduction to General Relativity

The theory of relativity usually encompasses two interrelated theories by Albert Einstein : special relativity and general relativity. General relativity explains the law of gravitation and its relation to other forces of nature. The theory transformed theoretical physics and astronomy during the 20th century, superseding a year-old theory of mechanics created primarily by Isaac Newton. In the field of physics, relativity improved the science of elementary particles and their fundamental interactions, along with ushering in the nuclear age.

Following the approach of Lev Landau and Evgenii Lifshitz, this book introduces the theory of special and general relativity with the Lagrangian formalism and the principle of least action. This method allows the complete theory to be constructed starting from a small number of assumptions, and is the most natural approach in modern theoretical physics. The book begins by reviewing Newtonian mechanics and Newtonian gravity with the Lagrangian formalism and the principle of least action, and then moves to special and general relativity. Most calculations are presented step by step, as is done on the board in class.

Algebra and trig are used, and there are optional calculus-based sections. This is where you'll learn the basics of thermodynamics, relativity, quantum mechanics, atomic physics, nuclear physics, particle physics, and cosmology. This book serves as an introduction to the essential topics in the fields. A quantum is a discrete quantity of energy proportional in magnitude to the frequency of the It might illustrate a quantum it itself. Both of these are quite new areas of physics. Perhaps a little demanding to begin with, but well worth going back to read later in the course. Some of the topics covered include the Bohr model, the photoelectric effect, wave functions and wave.

Einstein's general theory of relativity requires a curved space for the description of the physical world.
