Lecture Notes on General Relativity

These lecture notes are a lightly edited version of the ones I handed out while teaching Physics 8. Each of the chapters is available here as PDF. What is even more amazing, the notes have been translated into French by Jacques Fric. Je ne parle pas francais, mais cette traduction devrait etre bonne. Dates refer to the last nontrivial modification of the corresponding file fixing typos doesn't count. Note that, unlike the book, no real effort has been made to fix errata in these notes, so be sure to check your equations.

The topic of this course is the classical relativistic theory of gravity, General Relativity. This is a geometric theory: the key idea is that gravity is a manifestation of the curvature of space-time. We will then discuss the field equations of general relativity, and explore the physical properties of interesting simple solutions, describing black holes, cosmology, and gravitational waves. Suggestions for the web page are also welcome. There are many good books, a selection of which are listed below.

Introduction to General Relativity

Introduction to General Relativity is an introductory text on the concepts and modes of calculation used in general relativity. Topics covered range from Newton's laws of motion and the Galilean transformation to tensor analysis, equations of motion of free particles, electromagnetism, and gravitational fields and waves. Solutions of the field equations are also given. The emphasis is on the actual performance of relativistic calculations, rather than on mathematical rigor or exhaustive completeness.

Introduction to General Relativity

The theory of relativity usually encompasses two interrelated theories by Albert Einstein : special relativity and general relativity. General relativity explains the law of gravitation and its relation to other forces of nature. The theory transformed theoretical physics and astronomy during the 20th century, superseding a year-old theory of mechanics created primarily by Isaac Newton. In the field of physics, relativity improved the science of elementary particles and their fundamental interactions, along with ushering in the nuclear age.

Following the approach of Lev Landau and Evgenii Lifshitz, this book introduces the theory of special and general relativity with the Lagrangian formalism and the principle of least action. This method allows the complete theory to be constructed starting from a small number of assumptions, and is the most natural approach in modern theoretical physics. The book begins by reviewing Newtonian mechanics and Newtonian gravity with the Lagrangian formalism and the principle of least action, and then moves to special and general relativity. Most calculations are presented step by step, as is done on the board in class.

Algebra and trig are used, and there are optional calculus-based sections. This is where you'll learn the basics of thermodynamics, relativity, quantum mechanics, atomic physics, nuclear physics, particle physics, and cosmology. This book serves as an introduction to the essential topics in the fields.
