This book has derived its title from the custom which was strictly practiced by the Puritan settles. Whenever a woman was caught in adultery, she had to wear the letter 'A' embroidered in Scarlet colour on her dress. Scarlet colour symbolises blood, death, child birth and life. The scarlet letter is a book which deals with the consequences of the sin of adultery in the lives of three people most affected by it.

Themes in The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne include criticism of Puritan beliefs regarding sin, individual and society, social norms and sense of guilt. Some of these major themes have been discussed below. Sin and the sense of sin is one of the major themes that appear from the very first chapter from the discovery of the story and the scarlet letter. However, not only does sin mean an act against the accepted religious norms, but also a rebellion against social traditions. The passionate act of Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale which is considered as adultery, and when caught Hester is sentenced. However, Dimmesdale remains free due to his position, status, and influence. Hester has to go through grueling isolation due to her daughter, Pearl who is born out of wedlock.

Sorrow and Punishment in The Scarlet Letter

Containing a number of religious and historic allusions, the book explores themes of legalism , sin , and guilt. The Scarlet Letter was one of the first mass-produced books in America. It was popular when first published [2] and is considered a classic work today. Critics have described it as a masterwork [4] and novelist D. Lawrence called it a "perfect work of the American imagination". In Puritan Boston, Massachusetts, a crowd gathers to witness the punishment of Hester Prynne, a young woman who has given birth to a baby of unknown parentage.


The Scarlet Letter is essentially a story of crime, sin and punishment. It tells of the ignominy or humiliation of a woman who has broken scriptural and statutory.


The Power of Sin in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter

She is portrayed as a woman condemned by her Puritan neighbors. The character has been called "among the first and most important female protagonists in American literature". A resident of Colonial America , Hester is sent ahead to the "New World" by her husband, who later assumes the name of Roger Chillingworth , as he has some business to finish before he can join her. After he is shipwrecked and captured by Native Americans and presumed dead, Hester continues to live her life as a seamstress in the town.

Punishment means the infliction or imposition of a penalty as retribution of an offense, whereas forgiveness means the action or process of forgiving or being forgiven. The Scarlet Letter written by Nathaniel Hawthorne depicts punishment vs. Hester Prynne is able to overcome the humiliation of this symbol she has to ware on her chest and is finally able to live free.

The Scarlet Letter Themes

In Puritan community they followed the word of god and banned all sins. The sins committed were harmful and hurtful to people and their souls. Hester and Mr. Dimmesdale committed adultery with bearing a child named Pearl. Others feel that a person's punishment should be based upon the severity of their crime. However, what many people overlook is the fact that in time, we all have committed sins. In The Scarlet Letter, the idea of sin and punishment is the main theme of the novel and how Hester Prynne, the main character, has been punished for her sin of adultery.

Although a direct comparison of the three works seems to be problematical due to their different subject matters, the essay will figure out how crime and punishment is depicted in their broader frame. The main character of the novel, Hester Prynne, is mother of an illegitimate child Pearl and thus a sinner that, according to the strict Puritan laws, has to be ostracised and punished. The adulteress is also presented to an assembly of townspeople on the scaffold of the pillory.


CONCLUSION: The Scarlet Letter is a tragic story of sin, crime and Punishment which can be learnt by the deeds of all the characters, the crime.
